Race &... Initiative

Race &... is the shorthand name of Pitt’s Race and Social Determinants of Equity, Health and Well-being Initiative, which seeks to demonstrate the University of Pittsburgh’s commitment to investigate and ameliorate racial disparities in equity, health, and well-being locally, nationally, and globally.

Three interrelated goals make up the mission for this initiative.

  1. While the University undoubtedly houses great faculty expertise in these areas, it also strives to invest in and grow that knowledge and skill base. The cluster hire program seeks to significantly increase the number of faculty who are hired, promoted, and retained who conduct research, teach and serve in these areas, and strengthen their capacity to do this work.

  2. Launching a series of research “collaboratories” (i.e., interdisciplinary teams) focused on Race and the Social Determinants of Equity, Health and Well-being will support these new hires as well as existing Pitt faculty.

  3. Education, training and graduating the next generation of scholars (undergraduate, master’s and doctoral level) for whom the study of race and the social determinants of equity, health and wellbeing are personal and professional priorities.

The Race &... Initiative programming includes the Race &... Conference, the Race & Lecture Series, and the Race @Work Summer Retreat, with other programs and activities to be added over time.
